Why It Can Hurt to DIY Your Own Electrical

YouTube is an amazing place to learn how to do things. I love to learn new craft techniques, and gardening tips and my husband loves to see automotive rebuilds. If I screw up and make a mistake, I’ll be out a package of seeds, or some material, but if I try to DIY my electrical repair, I may be out a lot more than just a bit of material and the experience can be truly shocking.

You’ve dragged your feet around on the carpet and then touched a friend and laughed as they were shocked and you’ve probably also rubbed a balloon on your hair and then stuck it to the wall but this static electricity is a different story than alternate current (AC) electricity.

We all want to save money and do our own repairs so there are some things you need to know before you follow that wire and do your own work.

1) There are different colored wires in an electrical system and when tied together different things happen. One thing that commonly happens is a lost neutral or you use a plug tester and it tells you there is no neutral. This can occur naturally as your system may be older and no neutrals were actually used or they can be tied together with a different circuit. How do you know why you have no neutral, you can’t just coast to an answer for this one.

2) There is no ground, well what does that really mean? There is ground, I am standing on it using my plug tester! In actuality the “ground” is what keeps you from getting electrocuted when lightning strikes or power surges, or water touches electricity. Older systems had what is called a two-wire system and there was no ground so when you try to plug in that three-prong cord into a 2 prong you can’t. Changing the outlet to a three-prong outlet does not add a ground it just makes it so you can plug it in but does not get you the safety of grounding. Many of today’s appliances require grounding to keep the electronics from burning up or you getting burned up using your electronics. Your home is most likely grounded with a 10 ft long copper bar buried in the ground and connected to your electrical panel. Imagine how much fun it was to get that copper bar 10 ft into the ground. This is a different ground than what is at your outlet and will not protect your expensive computer or audio/video set up. Before the introduction of GFCI outlets there were 800 deaths a year from ground faults and now that number is down to 200.

3) There is a North Pole and Santa lives there. In your home there are also poles which create polarity and when a switch or outlet is wired wrong the polarity is reversed. What does this really mean for you, well you might not have to clean house for a while because the vacuum may not run when the polarity is reversed. Consumer products that get plug in caused approximately 180 injuries last year.

4) Your light does not work and you think, “I didn’t like that light anyway so I’ll get a new one. I can do that no problem I watched the video on YouTube”. Then you take the old light down and as you disconnect the wires you realize that there are more wires than the tube video showed. Eek, what do you do now. “We’ll just cap those wires off because we don’t need them”. At best your light might not turn off and on at the switch or an outlet may not work now but at worst badly done electrical caused more than 140,000 fires each year. Approximately 400 people died and 4000 were injured because of these electrical related fires. The cost of these fires is estimated to exceed $4 billion annually. Don’t be a victim.

In Washington state, anyone can do the electrical in their own home legally with or without YouTube help. In Washington state, a handyman, general contractor, your friend, or someone you know cannot do the electrical in your home. If you hire an electrician who does not own an electrical contracting business, he risks losing his license and livelihood to help you do your project. Last year 2021, LNI fined more than 5000 people for doing work under the table. Your 18-year-old child can get a contractor’s license in the state of Washington, do you want him to wire your brand-new home? NO, Washington state protects their citizens by requiring that all electrical and plumbing be done by a licensed electrician or plumber if not done by the homeowner themselves. It takes 4000 hours of training one-on-one or one-to-two with a licensed electrician to become licensed. By the way that is two years not a 10-minute video. You also have to pass two tests to show that you know how to do electrical safely and correctly. Does electrical repair sound like something you should be doing after watching a 10 min YouTube video? That choice is always the consumers to make but the outcome may surprise you.

1) The amount of electric shock from AC power on a simple circuit is dependent on the size of the circuit and the size of the person being shocked, and the burn you receive is dependent on that, but it doesn’t end there. If you are on a ladder and you get shocked and you startle and fall of the ladder you could end up with a debilitating head injury that destroys your family’s future. This is a real-life story not some made up fiction.

2) Your house burns down and the fire is traced to bad electrical done by you and now you not only have no home or a badly damaged home and the insurance may not pay you for the damage because you caused the faulty wiring. 3) We’ve all watched the funnies where they throw the toaster in the bathtub and buddabing it’s all over, well this is not what you want and correctly wired circuits won’t allow a death from a toaster or a blow dryer because the GFCI will cut off the power to that circuit. Children love to explore and put things into holes and lick and suck on things. Tamper-resistant outlets make it so that they can’t put a penny in the outlet and if they suck on an abraded cord plugged into a GFCI they won’t get an electric shock.

Why do I want Arc Fault Circuit Protection AFCI

What does an AFCI do and why would I want one?

One of the benefits of having a newer electrical system is that you have fire and shock prevention built into your Olympia Wa, Tumwater Wa, or Lacey Wa homes electrical system. If you have an older electrical system before 2000 you may not have this protection. AFCI is an easy protection to add to prevent fires and is highly recommended by the NFPA. AFCI breakers and or outlets are made to stop a spark from becoming a fire.

When these breakers or plugs sense a spark they turn the power off immediately. If you have these plugs or breakers and you are using an older device like a blow dryer, drill, smoker, or vacuum that has a motor it may trip the breaker because as the brushes in the motor turn they create sparks and these breakers are sensitive enough to sense that and turn off. AFCI breakers/plugs may also trip if all you do is unplug a device that is still turned on.

If you live in an older home and do not have these breakers you can add them to your circuits at the panel and do a circuit repair. You can upgrade and get and electrical panel replacement, and if your home is really old you can do a rewire.

Aluminum wire expands and contracts more than copper so as you use an outlet the wires connecting to that outlet as well as all the wires connected to that circuit are expanding and contracting and all the connections are becoming looser. Electricity needs to travel from wire to wire and if a space comes between two pieces of wire it now has to arc (spark) or jump across that space to the other wire in order to make contact and have electricity continue to flow. What is the difference between these two and why do I care?

A handyman is someone who does small projects around your home that could be called a honey do list and are in Washington state cost less than $2000.00. A general contractor usually does bigger projects that require more time and money and usually subcontractors. Neither in Washington state requires any kind of education or knowledge just the ability to pay for insurance, bond, and for a general contractor a license. Your 18 year old fresh out of high school can become a handyman or general contractor in Washington state. Would you trust them to build your deck or new house, or install plumbing or electrical? The licensing of either is totally state dependent. Their ultimate scope of work is also totally state dependent.

In Washington NEITHER of these guys can do ELECTRICAL or PLUMBING work. In Washington state you need a permit to do electrical and plumbing work. Because they do not require a handyman or general contractor to prove they know anything the state protects YOU by requiring these permits so the toilet will flush and the lights will come on once the work is done. If a contractor or handyman asks you to pull the permit that means they are not able to pull the permit themselves and they are doing illegal work. Washington does not allow a handyman to do work that requires a permit and all work must be physically done by them. You need to go to your state licensing board and in Washington that is www.LNI.Wa.gov and look at the scope of work they are allowed to do and what licensing requirements they have. Then don't ask them to work outside their scope and if they say they can do it ask for their electrical or plumbing specific license as these are separate from a general contractor license. Protect yourself from unscrupulous handymen and general contractors. Make sure they have those licenses, insurance, and bonds that your state requires and that the scope of work fits their license and that the permits were pulled. If something bad happens and you haven't hired the right professional with the right license and pulled the permit most insurance companies won't pay for the damage whether it be fire, flood, or collapse. Protect your home it is your biggest monetary investment.

Then make sure you don't pay them up front and if they are asking for upfront payment RUN. If they require a small service fee or dispatch fee that is acceptable and an industry standard as they can't run around and give out estimates without accruing some kind of cost. A company that runs themselves with integrity will also be financially solvent. Don't pay a contractor or a handyman for supplies until the supplier of the product signs a lien waiver. Many contractors will ask for 50% down for materials or subcontractors and in Washington you need a lien waiver from their supplier or subcontractor because if the general contractor fails to pay them they can lien your home to cover the amount owed them. Your new deck, windows, house, remodel, driveway, or whatever is not something you want to pay for twice.

Beware the cheap guy whether he is a handyman, general contractor, electrical or plumbing contractor. They are cheap for a reason. Remember your 18 year old can be a handyman or a general contractor, that license doesn't mean they know what they are doing. You don't want cheap materials, bad workmanship, or unreliable employees in your home no matter which one you hire. Cheap guys have to cut the corner somewhere in order to be cheap. People always say to get three estimates but If you have checked out the company at LNI, read a ton of good reviews, gotten good customer service offer the same warranty and guarantee , and they background and drug test their employees you will find that your three estimates will be fairly close to each other. Many companies will do an apples to apples guarantee if your business principles are the same. If there is a big difference there probably is a big difference between what they say they will do and what they actually will do or the warranty/guarantee and how they care for their customers will be very different. Also look for hidden costs in estimates such as permit fees, power company fees, ect that are extra on one and included on another so that you can really compare those estimates. If their customer service is bad before you even start the project their customer service during the project will probably be just as bad and sometimes even worse.

Never be afraid to ask for references from your handyman, general contractor, plumber, and or electrical contractor. Check them out on google. Read their reviews good and bad and make sure that if you're happy you leave them a good review. If the experience was not good make sure after you have tried to work things out with them. They are human. They may not even know that you're not happy if they sent employees to the job. If they are bad and don't even try to make things right with you leave them a bad review with that info. Also, if they have been unethical, immoral, illegal, or will not discuss options with you call your licensing agency and report them. If people don't report problem handymen and contractors they will continue to do wrong. In Washington all contractors and handymen are required to carry a bond and you can go against that bond to get some kind of financial reparation for their bad work.

Are you ready to start your Holiday Season. Do you feel like Nell Fenwick waiting for Dudley do Right to rescue you before the Christmas train runs you over. I too feel that way some days. In just a few short weeks the Christmas season will be over and done with but the onslaught of must do's to get ready for it is fear inspiring. My list has nothing to do with what I am asking Santa for. It is all about what Santa has to get done before the big day comes. I then remember that Jesus is the reason for this amazing season of celebration for me. Of course I want to celebrate Christ's birth with lights , songs, presents, and baking. If you come from another culture or belief system such as Jewish, Muslim, or none, this time also holds many celebrations with lights, songs, and baking.

Regardless of why your are celebrating this means lots of work and money. Make sure you are giving valuable gifts of yourself and not just your money. Sure you can't go to lunch with a beloved friend during this busy time but a handmade invitation to a January get together can be a lovely gift. Maybe drop off a thoughtful meal on a busy winter day when you know they get home late, pick their kid up for a fun event with your kids so they can have a night out or relax at home with no children around. Have a Decorate the Hall party and help each other decorate. This will surprise you as they may see something entirely different on your front porch than you and even if it is not amazing, go with it and enjoy the difference. Every time you walk up the walk you will think happy thoughts of the time spent with your friend. Make this season shine bright with love and forgiveness. No family or relationship is perfect.

Remember you also want to live through this holiday so don't overload your circuits with Christmas lights. Upgrade to LED if you can, if you can't then make sure you look at wattage and how many you can link together before you are creating a fire hazard. If you put a real tree in your house make sure you cut the bottom off about 3 inches up immediately before you put it in the tree stand and make sure you water it daily. Real trees need water.
